It is separated from Korcula by the Lastovo Channel. It has the area of 46.9sq. kilometers and 46.4 kilometers long coastline. The highest point is Hum at the altitude of 417 meters. The island has 1,300 inhabitants. Among numerous limestone hills there are Karst fields. There are a few caves, largest among which is Raca. The coast is rather steep, and on the south side of the island there is deep, large bay, safe anchorage sheltered from northern and western winds. Skrivena luka (the Hidden Harbor) is located on the eastern bay with low, sandy coast. The western coast of the island of Lastovo and the eastern coast of the small island of Prižba close picturesque coves protected from bura (northern wind) called Veliko jezero and Malo jezero (the Big and Small Lake). The settlement Lastovo is located in the northern part of the island and is connected by the road with the settlement Ubli on the southwestern coast. The inhabitants work in agriculture (vineyards, olive-groves, orchards, vegetable gardens) and fishing. West of the island of Lastovo is small, green, uninhabited island of Kopište with sand beaches in sheltered coves. Near the north-eastern coast of the island of Lastovo is located the archipelago of Lastovo - more than forty uninhabited islands, small islands and reefs. The island of Saplun is famous of its coves with send beaches and lighthouses are on a few small island. The sea around the small island of Mrcara is abundant with lobsters. The island of Lastovo was mentioned under the name of Ladesta in the times of Greek colonization of Adriatic. There are also remains of architecture of Roman and early medieval period in the cove Ubli.>
