VRNIK, an islet in the eastern part of the Pelje-sac channel in front of the eastern coast of the island of Korcula; area 0.3 sq km. The western part of the islet is separated from Korcula by a strait, which on some places reaches the depth of 5 km. The hamlet of Vrnik makes part of the town of Korcula. On the island is a quarry from which quality limestone (marble) is extracted. Marble from this quarry was used in part for the construction of Hagia/Saint Sofia Mosque (Istanbul) and the White House (Washington, D.C.). >
