Imotskif

The central settlement in the wide Imotska Krajina, important crossroads and small picturesque town near the fertile Imotsko Field. The prehistoric mounds and Roman graves have been found in the vicinity. In the medieval historical sources it was mentioned as important fortress. On the hill above the town there are the ruins of the old fortress. The Franciscan monastery has an archaeological collection of finds from the town and surroundings. There are many picturesque stone houses in the town. The area is very good for hunting and fishing. The surrounding area is interesting because of two Karst phenomena: Modro jezero (the Blue Lake), that lies by the western edge of the Imotsko Lake, and Crveno jezero (the Red Lake) that lies a kilometer further. The depth of these clefts, from the top of almost vertical rocks to the bottom of the lake is from 200 to 250 meters, while the depth of the lakes varies depending of the season, i.e. of the amount of precipitation. Both lakes are protected as geomorphologic rarity.>
