Island Scedro

SCEDRO, an island in the central part of the Korula Channel; separated from the southern coast of the island of Hvar by the edranski Channel; area 7.5 sq km (length 6.5 km, width up to 1.9 m); the highest top is Zelenikova Glava (113 m). The island is covered with forest of pine and macchia; parts of the land are vineyards. The coast is well-indented, there are many inlets with nice beaches; the coves Lovie and Mostir on the northern part of the island represent anchoring grounds for smaller vessels, and the coves ar-njeni, Borova and other larger coves on the southern coast offer safe shelters from the bora. The Lukavci cliffs are west off edro. Excursions to edro are regularly organized from Tevar.
There are several prehistoric tumuli. In the Rake caves fragments of the mosaic from a Roman villa rustica were found. The Mostir cove contains the ruins of a Dominican monastery built in the 16th century, abandoned at the end of the 18th century as well as of an early Christian church reconstructed in the Middle Ages. - It seems that edro is identical to the ancient island of Tauris near which the famous battle between the Caesar's and Pompey's fleets took place (47 BC).
