The island in front of Split, with the area of 59 sq. kilometers, six settlements, and about 1,500 inhabitants. It is separated from the mainland by Split Channel, and the ferryboat from Split comes in the harbor of Rogac. In inland is a Karst field covered with different agricultural cultures. The largest coves are Rogac and Necujam. The Maslenica cove is good anchorage for smaller ships. The bigger settlements are : Grohote, Gornje Selo, Srednje Selo, and Donje Selo in the inland. The island has been mantioned for the first time by the historian Pseudoskylak in the 4th century B.C., under the name Olyntha. The Romans called it Solenta, and in the Statue of Split from the 14th century, it has been mentioned under the name 覚lta.
