Klis
It lies between mountains Kozjak and Mosor, eleven kilometers from Split. The core of the settlement is below the medieval fortress. In the early Middle Ages, it was a fortified county center, mentioned for the first time in 852. There was also the court of Croatian princes. Although it was well fortified, the Turks took it in 1537, and after that became the masters of all Dalmatia except coast that was held by Venice. Today, the fortress houses a historical collection. In Klapavice, not far from Klis, there is the archaeological site Rižinice with the remains of the Pre-Romanesque church, the foundation of the prince Trpimir from 852. The stone fragment with watle-work decoration and the Latin inscription Pro duce Trepim (ero)... was also found there.
