It lies under the massive of Cicarija, not far from the spring of the river Mirna. The old part of the town is traditionally built on the isolated hill (151 m high), and the new part has been built at the foot of the hill (Funtana). In the Roman times, the name of the settlement was Pinquentum. In the Middle Ages it was the fortress. In the time of the Venetian dominance, when the town was fortified, it gained its present shape. Two town gates are still preserved: the main gate from 1547 (so called, the Big Gate), and the northern gate from 1592 (so called, the Small Gate). The parish church of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary was renewed in 1784 with interesting inventory and the paintings from the Venetian workshops. Other churches that are also preserved are: St. Juraj from the 17th century, St. Mary Magdalena from 1325, St. Vid on the cemetery, St. Ana - the Baroque church with the ground plan in the shape of a cross, and St. John, from 1634, with the high quality paintings.
