Novigrad-Istra

The small town and port on the western coast. It lies on the small peninsula that closes cove of the river Mirna from the north. The Roman town Emona, that was situated in the broader area of Novigrad, is mentioned even in the sources from the 6th century, under the name Neapolis. From the 5th to the 6th century it was also the center of the diocese. In the Middle Ages, it developed on the small island near the coast, that was connected with the mainland in the 18th century. The town preserved the medieval narrow, curving streets, small squares and the picturesque ambient. The system of medieval fortifications with two circular towers is also partly preserved.
The present parish church of St. Pelagije was radically reconstructed in the 15th and 16th century. The town loggia and a few other buildings were built in the Gothic style. In the Rigo Palace, there is a lapidarium with collection of antique and medieval stone fragments. The church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Karmel, with one nave, was built in 1460. The church of St. Agata was built on the cemetery, out of the perimeter wall, sometime in transition from the 10th to the 11th century.
On the small peninsula Krapinjan, you can see the remains of a large estate (stancia)with the palace of the Rigo family from 1760, built in the late Baroque style.
