Pazin

The seat of the county of Istria and economical and cultural center. The old part of the town developed on the edge of precipice Jama (Fojba), where the Pazin Creek disappears. On the steep rock, 120 meters above the precipice, there is Kaštel. The newer part of the town has been built in the lowlands. There are rich hunting-grounds in the surrounding area. It lies on the railroad Divača-Pula.
Kaštel was probably built in the 9th century and its present shape it got in period from the 13th to the 14th century. It is the most preserved medieval castle in Istria. Four massive are grouped around the central court. Today it serves as a museum. The parish church of St. Nikola from 1266, with Gothic sanctuary that was added in 1441, was reconstructed in the Baroque style in the 17th century. The separate belfry is from 1705. The walls and ceiling of the sanctuary are covered by Gothic wall paintings from the 15th century. The church museum has valuable collection of paintings, sculptures, art objects and Glagolitic manuscripts. The Franciscan monastery with the church was built between 1463 and 1477. At the end of the 18th century it founded public primary school and later gymnasium. It has rich library and archive.
