If we go from north to south, the first tourist place on the Croatian coast of the Adriatic would be Savudrija, situated on the north-western coast of Istria. The promontory of the same name, with a 36 meters high lighthouse, is the most western point of the Balkan peninsula. The settlement was built on the rocky coast, and surrounded with groves and coves. According to the tale, in 1177, the Venetian fleet destroyed the fleets of the German emperor Friedrich Barbarossa and Pope Alexander III near Savudrija. Near the lighthouse on the Savudrija peninsula there is the church of St. John Evangelist from the 11th century. Near the village Val Fontana, there is the church of St. Lovro from 1200 and in Valica there is the church of St. Jeronim from the 18th century.
