Umag

Small town and port on the north-western coast of Istria that consists from the old center on the small peninsula and the new part of the town on the mainland. The surrounding area is very fertile (vineyards and orchards). The area of Umag has been inhabited since the Roman times. In the Middle Ages, it was the part of the feudal estate of the Bishop of Trieste. Narrow, curved streets and picturesque squares are good example of the typical medieval urban architecture. Even the parts of the medieval town are preserved. The Baroque parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in the 18th century and the organ inside is dated in 1776. The church of St. Rok from 1514 has painted wooden ceiling and the church of St. Pelegrinus on the Rožac promontory has already been mentioned in 1106.
