The town and port, 15 kilometers from Rijeka. It was mentioned for the first time in the 13th century. In the 14th century, the princes of the Frankopan family built a strong citadel for protection against the Turks. That citadel still exists. In 1788, it became a free port, and in the last century it got the Naval Academy. All architectural froms characteristic for narrow Mediterranean settlement with narrow streets, staircases and old houses, are still visible. The parish church of St. Andrija, from 1830, has rich treasury and the museum has valuable archaeological collection, archive and the old portraits.
