Crikvenica
The picturesque, small town and the tourist center. It is an important traffic knot and port on the Crikvenica-Vinodol Riviera, 37 kilometers from Rijeka. With 2,500 hours of sun per year, it is among the sunniest places in Europe. Winters are gentle and summers warm and dry. The coast is indented and has many bays, sand and gravel beaches. The gentle Mediterranean climate and natural beauty enabled Crikvenica to develop from the old fishermen town to the tourist center by building of the first hotel "Clotilda". The first swumming beach facilities were built already in 1888, and the first hotel in 1891. In the same year the first tourist guide of Crikvenica was printed in Graz in German language. Crikvenica has the ideal conditions for medicinal tourism: well equipped special hospital for medicinal rehabilitation "Thalassotherapia". The settlement developed at the end of the 14th century around the old site of "crikve" (the church), and the name of the town came from this. The Paulist monastery was built in 1412. For years, it was the cultural and educational center. This is where the famous painter of the maniatures, Julije Klović, got his first education, Later, the monastery became the military hospital, and after that the children resort. Today it is the hotel. The church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in the Gothic style on the basis of the old "crikva", the historical core of Crikvenica, and later was renewed in the baroque style.
