Porozina
POROZINA, a hamlet of the village Filozici and a ferry port in the cove bearing the same name, on the south-western coast of the island of Cres; important connection of the Cres - Losinj archipelago with the mainland. Apart from the ferry connection Porozina - Rijeka, there is a connection Porozina - Brestova (on the eastern coast of Istria). The Porozina Cove is exposed to south-westerly and westerly winds. The depth of the sea at the head of the pier is 4.9 m. The wide coastal landscape around the cove is covered by thick macchia (mostly holm oak). The regional road connects it with all towns on the islands of Cres and Losinj. On a hill above the port, where once a lighthouse (hence the name Pharum insulae) from the ancient period used to stand, the Gothic church of St. Nicholas was built in the 15th century, renovated in the Baroque style in the 18th century. Three marble statues on the church altar and paintings covering the two side altars date from the Baroque period. In the 16th century the monastery of the Franciscan Tertiary Order (Glagolitic) was built, now in a dilapidated condition.
