The small town, port and the center of the island. It is situated on the south-west coast, in the bay of Krk. In Roman times it was the municipium Curicum. The most important architectural monument is the cathedral that was built on the remains of the Roman baths. Present Romanesque cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin with three naves, is from the 12th century while the belfry origins from the 16th - 18th century. It has a rich treasury. The collection of paintings of the Italian masters, from the 16th and 17th century, is kept in the cathedral building. The Romanesque basilica of St. Kvirin origins from the 10th and 11th century. Other preserved buildings are the tower of Kamplin from 1191, wall and bastions beside the sea from 1407, cylindrical tower and three town gates. Out of the town, there are the ruins of the Pre-Romanesque church of St. Lovro, that used to be a part of the Benedictine abbey. The oldest Glagolitic monument, the inscription from the 11th century was found in that church.
