Kolan

KOLAN, a town in the central interior of the island of Pag, 9 km south-east of Novalja; elevation 105 m; population 523. Chief occupation is farming. Kolan is located on the main road (M29) running through the island of Pag.
In the Classical Age, like in the nearby Caska (Cissa), there was probably a praedium (the remains of the aqueduct constructed for the ancient settlement Cissa). The moulding of a house contains an inscription in the Glagolitic script. Northeast of the town there are the ruins of the small Gothic church of St. Vitus from the 14th century, and to the west there is the church of St. Jerome, a rustic building from the beginning of the 16th century. Along the road to Novalja are the ruins of a small church of the Holy Spirit from the 14th century. Traditional colourful costumes are still worn in Kolan, and there is a valuable ethnological collection as well.
