The small town and port on the road Rijeka - Zadar, bellow Oštarijsko sedlo (also called Vrata, Kubus, 929 m) and opposite to the island of Pag from which it is separated by 2 kilometers wide Velebit channel. The Roman settlement Vegium was in the vicinity (the remains of walls, inscriptions, graveyard). At the beginning of the Middle Ages, the new settlement developed by the sea, Scrissa (or Bag). That settlement was under rule of the princes from the Kurjakovic family and in 1525 it was taken by the Turks. In 1579 it was restored by the Grand Duke Karlo after whom it was named. Since 1788 it is the free harbor. On the hill above the town there are ruins of the medieval town (Fortica).
