Lukovdol

LUKOVDOL, a village in the north-eastern part of Gorski Kotar, 4 km north-west of Severin na Kupi; elevation 180 m; population 256. Chief occupations are farming and wood processing. Situated on the local road.
The village has a late Baroque parish church of the Virgin Mary, with a round sanctuary and massive bell tower. In the hamlet called Rtic there is a one-nave Baroque church of the St. Francis Xavier with a three-sided end, dome-shaped vault over the nave and a massive side campanile, probably a part of an older building. The wooden Baroque furniture has rich carved ornamentation: the three altars (the main altar with Atlases) with relics, confessionals, a cabinet. - In the nearby village of Plemenitas there is an old stone house, according to a legend, the hunting castle of the Frankopans. There is a memorial plate on the birth-house of the poet Ivan Goran Kovacic, and close to the house is the statue to the poet, a work by Vojin Bakic.
